Massage strategies for children to use

Try these moves to get you started with baby massage:

Foot and legs. Keep your baby’s heel in one hand; start at the top of the thigh with the other hand and move slowly all the way down to the ankle, squeezing the leg gently as you go, as if you were milking a cow. Turn the motion off, and go from ankle to thigh. Then rub your thumbs over the feet, uncurling gently and stroking the toes. Turn your legs on. On the arms and hands you can perform these same strokes.

Cook. Start on both sides of your baby’s head with your hands, then run your hands down both sides of his body, from his head to his feet. First, draw tiny circles with your fingertips over your baby’s eyes.

In front. Fold your hands on your baby’s forehead (as if you were praying), then gently move away from the middle. First, use your thumb to draw a smile on your baby’s forehead, stroking from one cheek to the other, over the upper lip. Repeat on bottom lip.

Brust. Place your hands on the chest of your infant, then move them out to the sides, as if you were smoothing the pages of an open book.

Bump. Write an circle below your baby’s belly button with your fingertips. (Move clockwise, to follow the normal course of digestion.) First, “roll” your fingertips from one side of your child’s stomach to the other, diagonally, as if you were making a “X.”

Backside. Stroke side to side with his back and then up and down.
